After a long pre-season campaign the Vets played their first game of the year last Sunday against old rival South Croydon at Cheong Park.
The match was played in warm conditions and the boys were raring to go from the first bounce and subsequently got off to a flyer by slamming on 7 goals 6 behinds in the 1st term. Big Nick Fritsch was providing a focal point up forward after losing 12kegs over the summer months and new Skipper Paz was strutting his stuff around the CHF post. First gamers Lenny, DMac & Swanks were racking up possessions at will, while senior coach DeGraaf and the Cat were also doing whatever they liked and had the ball on a string.
In the second term the guys continued to dominate the footy and managed to kick another six goals 6 behinds to South’s solitary goal. Dools and Lunz were crumbing beautifully up forward, while Closey and Leighroy were strong with the contested footy and the on ball brigade were continuing to amass possessions.
The second half was a similar story to the first half with seven goals being kicked in the 3rd and another nine in the last term. The real interest after half time was to see how many goals big Nick was going to kick. Despite Upton & Berry constantly urging the coach to drag the big fella he was left on the ground and managed to score 11 majors for the match which is a new record for our Vets. The big fella was rather humble after the match giving all the praise to all his teammates up the ground who provided him with good supply all day.
Overall it was a very good result for the team not to mention the all important percentage which is always critical come the end of the year. Coach AB was heard saying after the game saying that he was particularly pleased that the boys were able to play four consistent quarters and for the team to adhere to instructions all day.
Next game is on 2nd May where we travel to Boronia in what will be a much tougher test for the boys.
